HYDRA: AN ILLUSION OF ABUNDANCE

HYDRA: “An Illusion of Abundance” – A Revolutionary Confluence of Art, Fashion, and Circularity

We are living times where overconsumption and environmental neglect are starkly evident, and “HYDRA – An Illusion of Abundance” is set as a groundbreaking project bringing on the same stage art, fashion, and sustainability, asking critical questions about the future of these interconnected sectors. With a fantastic turnout, the event served as a vibrant platform for dialogue, reflection, and action towards a more sustainable world.

The Visionaries Behind HYDRA, An Illusion of Abundance

The creative energy driving “HYDRA” stems from the collaboration of three luminaries: Simone Botte, the innovative creative director of the Simon Cracker brand; Mira Wanderlust, a noted visual arts lecturer at MOODART and senior editor of Red Eye World; and Luca MR, an acclaimed artist known for his profound paintings and striking bronze sculptures. Their partnership, bolstered by the participation of Humana People to People Italia, aimed to provoke thought and inspire a cultural shift in consumption habits.

Mira Wanderlust articulated the essence of the project eloquently, stating, “The HYDRA project was a profoundly intense and transformative experience for me, designed not only to raise awareness but also to instill empathy in a world that increasingly needs it.” She emphasized the urgent need for solutions in a world filled with environmental and social challenges. The collaboration with Humana People to People Italia facilitated a re-examination of circularity in fashion—a concept that encourages the continual use of resources while minimizing waste. Through various forms of visual art, the project crafted a compelling message about the intersection of creativity and social responsibility, serving as a rallying cry for action toward sustainable living.

Simone Botte added to the narrative, asserting, “It was a beautiful bridge that broke the system that usually separates art, fashion, sustainability, schools… finally a project that truly unites ideas and values.”

Luca MR, with his multifaceted artistic approach, enriched the dialogue further. He described contemporary art’s role as a space of tension between past and present, where beauty transcends mere aesthetics to engage with deeper questions of innocence and desire. “Artistic eco-sustainability fits into this scenario,” he noted, emphasizing the ethical considerations surrounding the materials and processes used in art-making. His reflections resonate strongly with the overarching theme of “HYDRA,” which seeks to marry beauty and responsibility, encouraging a new ethical perspective on art and fashion.”

At the heart of “HYDRA” was the participation of five renowned Italian fashion schools: IED Milano Fashion School, NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Polimoda, MOODART School of Fashion Communication, and Ferrari Fashion School. Students engaged in an immersive journey to explore the ramifications of current consumption patterns, creating installations that captivated audiences while highlighting the need for ethical and sustainable practices in fashion.

The students crafted their pieces from garments sourced from the Humana selection center in Pregnana Milanese, transforming them into compelling visual narratives outside the Humana Vintage and Humana People stores in Milan. These installations served to amplify the conversation around sustainability, compelling viewers to question the existing production cycle and its environmental impact.

A key event of the project took place at the MiArt Gallery located at Via Brera 3, Milan. This gathering witnessed the convergence of all participants involved, featuring a day saturated with artistic diversity and innovative ideas. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with the works of Mira Wanderlust and Luca MR, alongside a captivating musical performance by Bastiano. The student installations, originally showcased in store windows, found a new home in the gallery, offering visitors a unique perspective while encouraging reflective contemplation on their powerful messages.

Ilaria Miniaci, the manager of MiArt Gallery, expressed the critical role of contemporary art in the dialogue about environmental responsibility, stating, “Through recycled materials, environmental installations, and works dedicated to climate change, artists must invite reflection on the consequences of our actions.” This sentiment underlines the transformative potential of art as a vehicle for education and awareness, urging viewers to embrace more sustainable lifestyles.

Alfio Fontana, CSR & Corporate Partnership Manager at Humana People to People Italia, encapsulated the project’s essence by highlighting the significance of partnerships in fostering creative and educational frameworks. “Only by collaborating can we generate a real impact on current production and consumption models,” he asserted, advocating for collective responsibility towards future generations.

Beneath the artistic and educational endeavors of “HYDRA” lies a profound commitment to social impact. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of artworks will support the “Youth Academy” project of Humana People to People by DAPP Zambia. This initiative focuses on integrating former street children into society through a comprehensive two-year rehabilitation program, which includes vocational training in skills such as tailoring and design. Each year, the program graduates adolescents aged 16 to 18, guiding them towards reintegration into their communities and offering mentorship for small business initiatives.
