In the enchanting city of Bruges, a place renowned for its picturesque canals, cobblestone streets, and an air of romance, Carolina Mosquera embarked on a journey that would change her life and the lives of countless others. Her deep-seated passion for capturing genuine moments and authentic connections is evident in every click of her camera.

Carolina’s distinctive approach to photography revolves around spontaneity and the intimate bonds shared between couples. With an eye for detail that goes beyond traditional wedding photography, she finds beauty in the smaller elements that contribute to a celebratory atmosphere—everything from delicate flowers, intricate table settings, and love-laden rings, to the charming antics of children and the serene presence of family members caught in quiet moments. To Carolina, every element has a story to tell. Carolina is not just a skilled photographer but also a devoted mother and partner. Fourteen years ago, her own heart was swept away by the charming sociability of Maarten, who would soon become her husband. Their love story culminated in a rustic wedding ceremony in 2015, rich with laughter, heartfelt vows, and the warmth of close family ties. Together, they have built a life filled with joy, laughter, and four beautiful children: Matteo-Alessio, Dantes, Malena, and their youngest, baby Gia. Their family is the cornerstone of Carolina’s life, solidifying her belief in the importance of capturing precious life moments through her art.

At Lux Visual Storytellers, Carolina and her dedicated team work tirelessly to ensure that every client’s experience is not just satisfactory but truly memorable. Carolina, your journey into the world of visual storytelling is both inspiring and unique. Can you walk us through your early experiences that led you to establish Lux Visual Storytellers? What pivotal moments stand out for you?

I grew up with a grandfather who was a newspaper photographer. Every time I visited him, I found myself in the darkroom, mesmerized by the glass jars filled with mysterious liquids and the rows of photographs hanging from strings. I was fascinated by his collection of vintage cameras and loved watching images magically appear on paper—it felt like pure magic. At 15, I started taking my own photos, shooting on film and even experimenting with the famous shoebox camera. My grandfather had gifted me a camera, and I carried it everywhere, capturing snapshots of my life. That’s when I truly learned to see through a lens—to frame a story.

Shooting on film changes the way you look at the world. You become more aware of every detail, every line, and every shadow. You compose with intention, and you become selective—very selective.

And that’s how my life as a photographer began.

In 2015, I started Lux on my own, with my rock of a husband by my side. I remember how, in the beginning, we would go out to a restaurant to celebrate every new booking—a tradition that, less than a year later, we had to abandon because we were barely home anymore… and the extra pounds weren’t coming off! By 2017, we were fully booked incredibly early in the year, which meant constantly having to turn people away—a feeling that was absolutely awful. The balance was gone, and we were saying “no” far more than we could say “yes”. That’s when the idea of building a team was born. Over the following years, everything fell into place. Thanks to our team, we were able to navigate even the challenges of Covid. We leaned on each other, found new ways to grow Lux, and came out stronger once the world reopened.

With a master’s degree in sculpture and experience in the fashion industry, how have these backgrounds influenced your approach to photography? In what ways you think the intersection of different art forms enriches your storytelling?

Sculpture is the art of shaping light and shadow through matter, giving it meaning and form. To me, fashion is wearable art—much like sculpture—except its shape is partially dictated by the human body that inhabits it. I see spaces as a form of environmental art. Every window, staircase, and archway exists for a reason; each element has been carefully considered. The people within these spaces, moving through them, create new shapes of their own—shaping negative space, playing with light and shadow.

And then it’s up to you—to frame that interplay, to capture it with your eye, your intuition. Photography is a fusion of multiple art forms, each enhancing the other, coming together within your frame, within your vision.

You mentioned that your grandfather was a photojournalist, which inspired your love for photography. Can you elaborate on specific lessons or philosophies inherited from him that continue to influence your work today?

To be honest, I can’t say for sure, as he passed away when I was very young. What I do remember are his gestures, the way he moved, and the moments we shared—discovering photography together.

Your company focuses on crafting ‘timeless love stories.’ How do you define “timeless love story,” and what elements do you believe are essential to capture in your photography and film?

A timeless love story is built on a strong foundation—a love between two people that feels unbreakable and pure. It’s about commitment, sacrifice, and trust. A love story stands the test of time because it reflects emotions we all recognize and long for—authentic, selfless, and enduring love. It reminds us that true love never goes out of style.

The timeless quality of a love story can only be captured through a lens that sees things as they truly are on that day. The aesthetics of fleeting yet powerful moments—raw emotions, laughter, embraces, and the most unexpected yet beautiful connections between people. As photographers, we walk a fine line. We stay on the sidelines to remain unobtrusive, yet we also immerse ourselves in the moment, forming a connection so deep that we become partners in crime. That’s how we capture the most genuine emotions—the ones that tell a love story that will last forever.

Lux Visual Storytellers has garnered international acclaim. How do you ensure that your work remains distinct and reflective of your personal vision while appealing to diverse clientele across different cultures?

I always ask my couples what matters most to them on their day—every couple is different, and every culture has its own unique traditions. We discuss everything in advance to ensure their story is captured in a way that feels authentic to them. What makes my work distinct isn’t just the subject, but how I see moments—how I frame them, how I use light and shadow to enhance their depth and emotion. That approach remains constant, whether I’m photographing a couple from Belgium or from the other side of the world.

You’re known for your ability to balance documentary realism with cinematic artistry. How do you approach the technical aspects of photography to achieve this balance, and what challenges do you encounter during a shoot?

My documentary-style images emerge from moments filled with emotion and meaningful interactions—first looks, ceremonies, hugs, laughter. In these instances, I fully immerse myself in the moment, allowing the raw emotion and movement to shape the photograph. On the other hand, my cinematic images come to life when I have the freedom to play with light and shadow—whether I’m capturing dresses, jewelry, stationery, table settings, or other carefully curated details. The couple’s portrait session also provides the perfect opportunity to blend artistry with storytelling. One of the biggest challenges is balancing these two styles in real time. Sometimes, a beautiful light spot appears, but there isn’t enough time to use it, or a key emotional moment is unfolding elsewhere that demands my attention. Prioritization is key—ensuring that no significant moment is missed while still creating visually striking imagery.

Your mission emphasizes capturing the beauty and authenticity of love. How do you help couples feel at ease in front of the camera, allowing their genuine emotions to shine through in your work?

I love getting to know my couples beforehand—it gives me insight into who they are as individuals and how they interact together. This helps me understand their personalities and tailor my approach on the wedding day. Are they naturally confident and carefree, or do they feel a bit more reserved in front of the camera?Building a connection with my couples is essential. I want them to know me as well, to realize that I’m just a person like them—someone who would feel just as awkward in front of a camera! During the shoot, I keep the atmosphere light and fun. I talk to them, guide them, and give them small actions to do rather than stiff poses. Movement is key, and I encourage them to interact, talk, and enjoy each other’s presence. It doesn’t have to be serious—having fun together creates the most genuine moments. Some couples have a soft, intimate energy, while others are bold and expressive. I embrace these differences and shape the shoot accordingly, so their personalities truly shine through.

It’s clear that you have a strong philosophy regarding your imagery. Can you share how you developed this philosophy and how it shapes the overall brand identity of Lux Visual Storytellers?

Since becoming a mother (a mother of four), I’ve gained a deeper understanding of the essence of life—how powerful and precious shared moments are, and how rare it can be to have all your loved ones by your side. As life gets busier, relationships evolve, and time together becomes fleeting. A wedding is one of those rare occasions where everything comes together—where love, family, and connection are celebrated. These moments turn into lifelong memories of a truly special day. I know this might sound like a cliché, but it’s the foundation of every wedding: the love between two people radiating outwards, surrounded by the warmth and support of those closest to them. It’s the heart of everything.

At Lux Visual Storytellers, we believe that true beauty lies in the authenticity of moments. Our passion is to capture stories that go beyond the surface—stories that reflect the essence of love, connection, and emotion. Every image we create is infused with depth, artistic vision, and genuine feeling. Our approach is both intuitive and unique, striking a delicate balance between documentary and fine art photography. We don’t just capture moments as they happen—we capture them as they feel. By playing with natural light, rich tones, and elegant compositions, we create images that are both timeless and deeply evocative of the atmosphere of the day. We embrace diversity, culture, and the individuality of every couple we work with. No two love stories are the same, and that’s what continues to inspire us. We’re constantly evolving and pushing creative boundaries while staying true to our ultimate goal: preserving memories that will last for generations.

Having been featured in prominent publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, what impact do you believe media recognition has on a creative professional’s journey? How has it influenced Lux’s narrative?

I see these kinds of publications as a tremendous honor—something I never imagined I would achieve. Being featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, or Tatler is more than just press; it’s recognition from some of the most iconic, influential, and esteemed publications in the world. These magazines are beacons of style, elegance, and excellence—setting the standard for artistry, creativity, and cultural impact.

For me, Vogue has always been more than just a magazine; it’s a statement of vision, craftsmanship, and inspiration. It defines timeless beauty, celebrates artistic innovation, and champions the highest levels of creative expression. To see our work grace its pages is an indescribable milestone.

When you follow your heart, trust your vision, and commit to your craft, doors begin to open in ways you never expected. Staying true to the creative process has been an incredibly fulfilling journey, and reaching this point is both humbling and exhilarating. We have now arrived at a stage where we no longer question the quality of our work—we push ourselves to set the bar even higher. Excellence is not just a goal; it’s a constant pursuit, and we are honored to see our passion recognized on such a global scale.

Can you talk about the importance of teamwork in your studio? How do you cultivate a collaborative environment that allows your photographers and cinematographers to thrive and express their creative talents?

Working as a team is everything. It’s truly invaluable to have a team you can rely on—one that supports, helps, and has your back. Together, we share the responsibility in growing Lux, and that feeling is priceless. We recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we focus on nurturing the strengths and personal goals of each member. At Lux, there is room for personal growth, and we make sure to provide that.

We are open to input and creative collaboration. We learn from one another, which helps us grow faster as creative individuals. We’re tightly knit, almost like a family, and I love seeing howmy team connects even outside of working hours—whether it’s socializing or seeking advice from one another. This bond strengthens not only our creativity but also the way we work together.

As someone who is always striving for innovation, what emerging trends or technologies in photography and cinematography excites you, and how do you plan to incorporate those into your future projects?

AI editing is something we’re already incorporating into our work. It significantly speeds up our workflow, although everything still requires thorough review. However, it’s truly remarkable how quickly this technology is advancing.

With the rise of AI, I’ve noticed a shift in the wedding photography landscape, where there’s a return to the old-school art of photography, especially analog photography. We’re going back to truly observing moments, rather than simply pressing a button and capturing thousands of photos. It’s about being selective with our images, taking the time to truly see and understand the moment. While something new is emerging, we’re also returning to the basics, focusing on quality rather than quantity, and moving away from the fleeting nature of the digital world.

Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring wedding photographers looking to establish their unique style and voice in a competitive industry? What key lessons have you learned throughout your career?

I believe it’s essential to strike a balance between staying true to your style and listening to what the client desires. It’s important to be a realist (something I truly enjoy), acknowledging the significance of what we do without losing perspective—let’s face it, we’re not curing cancer (although I wish we could). Be a perfectionist, but also learn to relax and be flexible. And above all, cherish the moments you’re about to witness—embrace every single one of them.
